Women's Education Rights
One of the big segregation disadvantages for Saudi women is in education. In Saudi school boys and girls are taught separately and the women facilities are substantially inferior to that of males. Class sizes for women are much larger and the females teachers are far less trained than the buys teacher are. For women, access to the library is limited and not nearly as complete as those of men. For instance, at the King Saud University in Riyadh, women are allowed to use the library only one morning every week, and the men use it the rest of the time. The severe shortage of women teachers for female students at the university level has forced modem innovation to uphold ancient social practices. At times the universities use male teachers for women's classes, but such instruction is done via closed-circuit television so that the teacher and the students never meet face to face. Despite considerable improvement in the education of women since 1960,when they were first allowed to go to school, women in Saudi Arabia are when they were first allowed to go to school, women in Saudi Arabia are
educated in traditionally 'feminine' subjects. According to one Saudi expert on education, girls should ideally be educated in the Qur'an and in raising a family and housekeeping. University studies should not be necessary, since at this age a woman should be married - all other things that prevent a woman from realizing her responsibilities (as a wife and mother) should be considered forbidden.
